Death Valley National Park

Although the Twenty Mule Teams, prospectors with their burros, and lost pioneers represent the extent of human history in Death Valley to most people, it actually started long before and continues today. Native people have been here since at least the end of the last Ice Age. Towns and mining camps have come and gone. Mining companies have moved from harvesting the mineral wealth to developing the valley for tourism. Most recently, Death Valley has become a cherished National Park, visited by humans from around the globe. About an hour’s drive from Artesia at Hafen Ranch, Death Valley National Park is just one of our beloved local jewels in the desert!

China Ranch Date Farm

When traveling through the Death Valley area consider visiting beautiful China Ranch, near Tecopa, California and about 40 minutes from Artesia at Hafen Ranch. China Ranch is a family owned and operated small farm, a lush piece of greenery amidst the forbidding Mojave Desert near Southern Death Valley. Imagine towering cottonwoods and willows by a wandering stream, date palms and abundant wildlife, all hidden away in some of the most spectacular scenery the desert has to offer.

Shoshone Village

Breathe deep and allow the fresh, clean air of the Amargosa River Valley to invigorate you. Explore Shoshone’s World class geology and marvel at its colorful history as a railroad town and rich mining district.

“Let the penetrating heat of the day, and the fiery glow of the sunset melt away your stress. Cool by day and warm by night, yield to the warm spring’s power to enliven your senses…”

Located about 20 miles from Artesia, at the gateway to Death Valley, the Crowbar Café and Saloon is located in the heart of Shoshone Village. The restaurant was built in the 1930’s and still serves handcrafted cuisine in a traditional western atmosphere. The adjoining saloon long has been famous as a meeting place for locals and visitors alike. Shoshone Village is the perfect oasis and home-base when visiting and staying in Death Valley.

Nevada’s Abundant Wildlife

Nevada is surprisingly the most mountainous state in the continental United States. It is second in mountain ranges only to Alaska. The climate of Nevada is arid and semi-arid. Despite the desert conditions over the majority of the state, certain mountainous regions do receive rain from what is called the Arizona Monsoon. This event sometimes drops significant water on regions of Nevada resulting in sky islands, lush areas of plant life in the elevated mountain valleys, far above the desert plains. The climate in Nevada makes the days hot and the nights cold, a typical transition for a desert region. Despite being so dry and hot, the state has over 126 different species of mammals, as well as 54 reptiles, 17 amphibians, and over 80 species of fish. Nevada’s arid deserts are bursting with life both plant and animal all year round.

Pahrump Valley Winery

Don’t think grapes can grow in the desert? Well, think again. The Pahrump Valley Winery opened in 1990 and the first vines were planted shortly thereafter. Unfortunately, wild horses thought these young vines were dinner and they fell victim to this herd. The vines were lost only to be replanted a couple of years later, this time with a fence! In the fall of 2002, we discovered the winery and felt it could have a bright future. In January 2003 we took control of the winery and began the long and much needed process of upgrading and renovating the entire property. The complete and total renovation of the winery also included a new state of the art kitchen and complete remodel for our restaurant, Symphony’s.

Furnace Creek Ranch

Welcoming guests since 1933, the Ranch at Furnace Creek offers accommodations in a casual, family-like setting — the perfect complement to the classic elegance of the Inn at Furnace Creek. As you wander around the western-themed grounds, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported back to the 1800’s when this site was established as a working ranch. Yet, you’ll enjoy the amenities of modern civilization, like quiet, recently refurbished rooms, a spring-fed swimming pool, tennis courts, a children’s playground and the National Park Service Visitor’s Center – which is just a stone’s throw away. So is the 18-hole golf course – the lowest elevation course in the world – and Golf Pro Shop. With two restaurants, a bar and the epicenter for numerous activities.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area in Nevada is an area managed by the Bureau of Land Management as part of its National Landscape Conservation System, and protected as a National Conservation Area. Red Rock Canyon is about a 25 minute drive southeast of Artesia at Hafen Ranch. This breathtakingly scenic conservation and recreation area is visited by more than two million people each year.
